Another bright idea from the creative folk over Rhode Island's finest imprint Last Visible Dog. This time around, mixed bag of artists pays homage to various aspects of the crows. Over ten volumes in total, artists will examine various aspects of the crows, including flock formations, nesting habits, plumage, egg-form, distribution, food, behaviour, field marks, voice, enemies, winter habits, range, courtship procedures and migratory habits. Paper Wings' [Anthony Guerra and Antony Milton on electric guitars, whisper and wailing] devastating 24 minute "Horse Latitudes" is a scorching number. Featuring blistering guitar work from both Milton and Guerra, the crescendos they weave are obstinate and uplifting. The North Sea's "Albino Deer Transmissions" is an elongated piece of work by Brad Rose. Mass of banjos, plucked guitars and earthen percussive elements go into making the piece a success. Andrea Belfi "RIB" is an interesting number featuring Belfi on electro-acoustic devices, prepared loops, harmonium, synth and voice, and Stefano Pilia on bass, along with Valerio Tricoli on synth. Together they mould sounds that are warm, obliterating, dangerous and alien. Continuing on, Northern Cross delivers a piece that is gritty, dense and wildly hypnotic, while Brasil & The Gallowbrothers Band continues on their journey into musical realms that are freakish without breaking into a sappy or intimate element. Sunken come up with a drilling, machine-like field of humming that permeates the deepest, darkest corners of your ears. When the vocals come in, the piece begins to resemble a ceremony of offering or worship. Each of the pieces is finely tuned at a good length of time and each artist takes their sweet time at developing their musical process without any haste. Terrific way to start off another study of nature.
